Electricity Bill Instalment Plans in Pakistan
Most DISCOs let you split a large or overdue electricity bill into monthly instalments instead of paying it in one go. Who qualifies, how to apply, and what it doesn't do.
A single oversized bill — a brutal summer month, or arrears that quietly built up over several unpaid cycles — can be more than a household or small business can clear in one payment. What isn't always obvious is that most DISCOs will let you split that amount into fixed monthly instalments instead of demanding it all at once.
What the Plan Actually Is
It's a signed agreement with your DISCO to pay an outstanding balance in fixed monthly parts, in addition to your regular current bill each cycle. In exchange for that commitment, the DISCO holds off on disconnection while the balance gets paid down gradually rather than in one lump sum.
Who Tends to Get Approved
Terms vary by DISCO and by individual case, but approval generally goes to:
- Domestic consumers hit with a one-time spike — a long absence, a meter correction, or a backdated adjustment
- Consumers with accumulated arrears who approach the DISCO before a disconnection notice is issued, not after
- Small commercial or industrial consumers going through a temporary cash-flow crunch
- Cases where a billing dispute is genuinely under review and a partial-payment arrangement covers the gap while it's resolved
Applying — It's an In-Person Process
There's no online form for this; it requires a signed agreement, which means a visit:
- Go to your local DISCO customer service center or SDO/XEN office before the deadline on any disconnection notice you've received
- Bring your CNIC, your latest bill, and your reference or consumer number
- Explain your situation to the customer relations officer and request an instalment arrangement
- Agree on the number of instalments and the monthly amount — largely at the DISCO's discretion
- Sign the agreement, which typically adds on top of your regular monthly bill from that point forward
- Pay every instalment on time — missing even one can void the agreement entirely
What the Plan Doesn't Do
It spreads the payment out — it doesn't reduce what you owe. You'll still owe the full current-month bill each cycle, on top of the agreed instalment. Late payment surcharges can still apply to a missed instalment, and a broken agreement typically triggers immediate disconnection with the entire remaining balance due at once.
Avoiding the Need for One in the First Place
Checking your bill every cycle on Electricity Bill and paying on time — even in small partial amounts where your DISCO's banking channel allows it — catches a high bill while it's still manageable. Arrears that reach a disconnection notice are far harder to negotiate down than a bill caught the month it happened.
